The 7 Days Rongai Route is the only northern approach to Mount Kilimanjaro, near the Kenya border. Known for its quiet trails and beautiful northern landscapes, this route provides a peaceful trekking experience with excellent acclimatization and a high summit success rate.

Rongai Route Itinerary (7 Days)

Day 1 – Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Elevation: 1,950m to 2,750m | Hiking time: 3–4 hours

The trek starts at Rongai Gate. Walk through lush rainforest to reach Simba Camp, enjoying the peaceful northern side of Kilimanjaro.

Overnight: Simba Camp

Day 2 – Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp

Elevation: 2,750m to 3,300m | Hiking time: 4–5 hours

Climb gradually through open moorland and volcanic ridges to Second Cave Camp, with panoramic views of the northern slopes.

Overnight: Second Cave Camp

Day 3 – Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Caves Camp

Elevation: 3,300m to 3,600m | Hiking time: 4–5 hours

Trek across alpine desert terrain with spectacular views before reaching Kikelewa Caves Camp.

Overnight: Kikelewa Caves Camp

Day 4 – Kikelewa Caves Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Hut Camp

Elevation: 3,600m to 4,300m | Hiking time: 5–6 hours

Ascend toward Mawenzi Tarn Hut Camp, enjoying the rugged volcanic landscape and views of Mawenzi Peak.

Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Hut Camp

Day 5 – Mawenzi Tarn Hut Camp to Kibo Hut

Elevation: 4,300m to 4,700m | Hiking time: 4–5 hours

Climb to Kibo Hut, the base camp for the summit push. Rest and prepare for the early night departure.

Overnight: Kibo Hut

Day 6 – Summit Day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then descend to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m to 3,720m | Hiking time: 10–14 hours

Start around midnight for the summit push to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. After reaching the summit, descend to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.

Day 7 – Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m | Hiking time: 4–5 hours

Final descent through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate, where climbers receive their summit certificates and transfer back to their hotel.
