The 7 Days Machame Route is one of the most popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain at 5,895 meters. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” the Machame Route is famous for its spectacular scenery and excellent acclimatization profile.

This route approaches the mountain from the south and passes through several unique ecosystems including rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and glacial summit zones inside Kilimanjaro National Park.

The 7-day itinerary allows climbers more time to adapt to the altitude, increasing the chances of reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak.

Machame Route Itinerary (7 Days)

Day 1 – Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Elevation: 1,800m to 3,000m
 Hiking time: 5–7 hours

After registration at Machame Gate, the trek begins through dense rainforest filled with giant trees, ferns, and wildlife.

Overnight: Machame Camp

Day 2 – Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Elevation: 3,000m to 3,840m
 Hiking time: 4–6 hours

The trail climbs out of the rainforest into the moorland zone with beautiful views of the Shira Plateau.

Overnight: Shira Camp

Day 3 – Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower)

Elevation: 3,840m to 3,960m
 Hiking time: 6–7 hours

This day helps acclimatization by climbing to Lava Tower (4,600m) before descending to Barranco Camp.

Overnight: Barranco Camp

Day 4 – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,960m to 4,035m
 Hiking time: 4–5 hours

Climbers tackle the famous Barranco Wall before continuing to Karanga Valley.

Overnight: Karanga Camp

Day 5 – Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m
 Hiking time: 4–5 hours

A short but steep hike leads to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt.

Day 6 – Summit night (Uhuru Peak) to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m to 3,100m
 Hiking time: 10–14 hours

Climbers begin the summit push at midnight and reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Mweka Camp.

Overnight: Mweka Camp

Day 7 – Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m
 Hiking time: 3–4 hours

The final descent through the rainforest leads to Mweka Gate where climbers receive their summit certificates.
