Detailed Itinerary
Registration at Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. Armed ranger joins for wildlife protection. Trek through montane forest with chances to see buffalo, giraffes, warthogs, and colobus monkeys. Arrive at Miriakamba Hut with views of Mt Meru crater. (4-6 hours, 10 km, +1,014m)
Steep ascent through alpine meadows and moorland. Views open up dramatically. Pass Little Meru (3,820m) viewpoint. Arrive at Saddle Hut. Afternoon acclimatization walk to Little Meru for sunset views. Rest and early dinner before midnight summit attempt. (3-5 hours, 5 km, +1,056m)
MIDNIGHT START for summit push. Ascend steep rocky path to Rhino Point (3,850m), then along spectacular knife-edge ridge to Socialist Peak at sunrise. Incredible views of Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru crater. Descend to Saddle Hut for breakfast, then continue all the way to Momella Gate. LONG DAY! Transfer to hotel. (10-14 hours, 20 km total, +996m/-3,066m)
